Detroit Packard Plant plan halted by new mayor's administration

The big picture: The Packard Plant is one of few large blank-slate sites left in Detroit, city spokesperson John Roach said in a statement.

The latest: The city exercised its right from a December letter of intent to "unilaterally terminate" the negotiations, per a late February letter from city planning director Alexa Bush to the developers.

What they're saying: "The project had been progressing just months after it was announced, but we understand that a new administration can have new priorities," Mark Bennett and Oren Goldenberg of Packard Development Partners LLC said in a statement.

• "It remains our vision, with our many partners, to preserve the legacy of the Packard site and bring jobs to the City of Detroit. We stand ready to help Detroit with this mission."

• They declined further comment or an interview.

As of December, developers expected to break ground in 2027 on the 28-acre southern section of the Packard site.

• They planned to restore a vacant Albert Kahn building into housing, an indoor skate park and an electronic music museum.
• Another new building would serve a to-be-determined manufacturing company.
• Goldenberg is known for co-owning Dreamtroit, the redevelopment of the old Lincoln Motor factory.
