Detroit Chinatown revival moves toward construction

• Now, the most detailed vision yet shows what that investment is expected to build.

Driving the news: The design plan unveiled last week calls for:

• Public art and cultural elements honoring Detroit's Chinese American history.
• Public space for markets and events.
• Native landscaping, including street trees and planters.
• Decorative street lighting and lantern-inspired fixtures to boost nighttime safety.
• Wider sidewalks and upgraded paving to improve accessibility.

Renderings show lantern canopies, ginkgo trees, red accents and bronze plaques embedded in the pavement commemorating old Chinatown landmarks.

Follow the money: Some of the state grant was spent on predevelopment costs, so there's about a $1.7 million funding gap for the $2.4 million streetscape project.

What's next: Fundraising, documentation, bidding and construction phases are planned for this year, with a potential groundbreaking in spring 2027, Midtown Inc. executive director Melanie Markowicz tells Axios.
