Lions headed to Germany for 2026 NFL game

The Lions are headed to Germany this year as part of the NFL's international schedule, the league announced yesterday.

Why it matters: The franchise already has several connections to Germany — from star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown's heritage (his mother was born there) to the team's German-inspired mascot, "Leo Löwe."

Driving the news: Detroit will play at Allianz Arena, home of FC Bayern Munich.

The game's date, kickoff time and the Lions' opponent will be released later along with the greater NFL schedule.

State of play: Every eight years, NFL teams must give up a home game in a season with nine home dates and play internationally.

A previously scheduled Lions-Jaguars matchup in London was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Flashback: The Lions last played overseas in 2015, when they lost 45-10 to Kansas City at London's Wembley Stadium.

They beat Atlanta, 22-21, at Wembley in 2014.
