The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit will reopen April 25 after a closure for renovation.
The big picture: MOCAD shut its doors in August to make infrastructure improvements and redesign its facade with a new window art display along Woodward Avenue in Midtown.
- MOCAD also plans to rename its main building for its late co-founder, Julia Reyes Taubman.
- The Mike Kelley Mobile Homestead, a smaller gallery space next to MOCAD, remains open through the main building's closure.
State of play: A spring exhibition will begin MOCAD's 20th anniversary celebration with the theme "A Practice of Multiplicity."
- "This milestone is an opportunity to reflect on MOCAD's history as a space of radical artmaking, experimentation, and civic engagement, and to look ahead to the possibilities that contemporary art opens for our city," MOCAD co-director Jova Lynne said in a news release.
- "It's a season that embodies our belief that art is inseparable from community reflection and care."
Zoom in: Also on tap for the season is the first comprehensive museum retrospective of Olayami Dabls, the artist and historian who created Detroit's MBAD African Bead Museum.
- It will include paintings, collages, sculptures and other works that haven't been exhibited.
- Dabls' work fuses art, learning, ritual practices and community. He draws from African symbology, African American history and the city's industrial materials to create outdoor installations and other art.
Another influential local artist, quilting and textile expert Carole Harris, will trace her career over decades starting in the 1970s. The exhibition will show Harris' improvisational and layered works, while also providing context about the city's Black arts scene in the 1970s-90s.
- Martha Mysko, co-leader of the Cranbrook Academy of Art's painting department, will show her works composed of salvaged materials in her first solo museum exhibition.
