Trump touts "economic boom" in Detroit as protesters rally

What they're saying: "The results are in, and the Trump economic boom is officially begun," the president said during his speech, per the News.

State of play: While consumer sentiment is at historic depths, the federal government said Tuesday that inflation held at a four-year low in December.

• The Consumer Price Index rose 2.7% in the 12 months ending in December, while core CPI — which strips out food and energy costs — rose 2.6%.
• On a monthly basis, CPI rose 0.3%, while core CPI rose 0.2%. Both measures rose 0.2% in the two months from September to November.

Before his speech, Trump toured Ford's Dearborn Truck Plant with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Ford executive chairman Bill Ford Jr., CEO Jim Farley and the plant's manager, Corey Williams, the News reported.
