Figurative painter Andre Barker Jr.'s new exhibition explores rest and stillness as forms of power and resistance for Black people.
The big picture: Barker's "Rest Is" solo show runs Jan. 16-Feb. 14 at the M Contemporary Art gallery in Ferndale.
- Barker, a Detroit-based artist and adjunct Wayne State professor, has shown work here, throughout the Midwest and nationally.
What they're saying: "Especially during a time of political unrest, it feels crucial to show Black people who are unbothered, existing fully within their own bubble," Barker said in a statement. "The colored borders around the figures are intentional; they are designed to push them out of the canvas and directly into our space."
- Showing individuals existing without external worries challenges the idea that Black people must "perform, endure or explain," a news release says.
