Bev's Bagels is growing in Detroit and Ann Arbor

Bev's Bagels is doubling its footprint in Core City and opening a second location in Ann Arbor next year, the bagel diner announced Tuesday.
Why it matters: Bev's expansion comes after its Detroit opening attracted a crowd last spring in one of the city's emerging neighborhoods.
Driving the news: Adding space to the original location on Grand River Avenue will allow for additional seating, extra room for new pastry and bread offerings and more collaborations with other chefs and community groups.
- The Detroit renovations will happen later this winter.
- The new Ann Arbor location, on East Liberty Street next to RoosRoast Coffee, is expected to open in late summer next year.
What they're saying: "I'm incredibly excited to have a proper oven right in downtown Ann Arbor, surrounded by great neighbors and so much to plug into," founder and chef Max Sussman, who started Bev's Bagels during the pandemic as a pop-up in Ann Arbor, said in a statement.
State of play: Bev's serves traditional bagel varieties (like sesame, plain and poppy seed) and more adventurous choices (spicy furikake, za'atar and pumpernickel-everything).
- Cream cheese flavors include lox and chive, za'atar and Kalamata olive and chili crisp.
- There's a wide selection of sandwiches with lox, whitefish, fried chicken, pastrami and other ingredients.
The intrigue: The Core City location's Community Sandwich Project allows customers to buy a bagel sandwich in advance for people in need.
- "What we want now is to make sure people know these are available to be redeemed, no questions asked," Sussman said.
