Detroit's famed Kronk Gym reopened this month in a location that's just as historic — an old rec center where Joe Louis trained.
Why it matters: A new owner has brought back the iconic boxing institution that trained champions like Thomas "Hitman" Hearns.
- It's now in the long-vacant but recently renovated Brewster-Wheeler Recreation Center, a magnet for prolific boxers in the 1930s and '40s.
Flashback: Legendary local boxing trainer Emanuel Steward started his boxing career at Brewster-Wheeler and went on to become the Kronk rec center's head coach in 1971.
- He was there through its closure in 2006 and then opened another Kronk that closed in 2012 when he died.
🥊 The "godfather of Detroit boxing" trained dozens of world champions through what the new Kronk owners called his "strategic genius and nurturing approach."
- Their website describes a desire to carry on his vision for supporting youth, uplifting the sport of boxing and fostering talent.
Context: The new business is owned by a group that bought Kronk trademarks from Steward's family, who remain involved in a consulting capacity, CEO Paul Bhatti tells Axios.
- Also among the owners is COO John Lepak, who trained at the original Kronk and learned the business side of boxing from Steward, eventually becoming his office manager and traveling with him.
What they're saying: "Our goal is to follow that same blueprint that Emanuel left for us and build back a quality amateur team that is looking to fight locally, nationally as well as internationally," Lepak tells Axios.
- The new location will "provide opportunities for the kids to travel and get off the block and have someplace safe and productive to go" while learning life lessons, he says.
- Steward's daughter, Sylvia Steward-Williams, said in a news release: "Kronk shaped boxing around the world, and my father dedicated his life to Detroit. We are proud to see this legacy enter a new era with this amazing team leading the way."
Zoom in: Kronk Gym memberships range from $90 to $129 a month, with training and HIIT classes, or $35 a month for youth.
- Training is available for all levels, and Kronk is seeking to eventually build out a roster of pro athletes. It offers boxing management services, fighter development and coaching and future career planning.
What we're watching: Developers broke ground in November on four residential buildings on another section of the Brewster-Wheeler site near the rec center.
- They're building 211 units of affordable housing and supportive housing with services aimed at helping young adults transition out of foster care.
