Art enthusiasts seeking an affordable way to collect, take heed — the Irwin House Global Art Center and Gallery's holiday exhibition has begun.
The big picture: The gallery's sixth annual Gift of Art show (through Dec. 21) is guest-curated by prominent local artist and muralist Phil Simpson, known for his smile brand.
State of play: This year is its biggest yet, with 80 emerging and established artists, more than half of them women, featuring a total of 200 works.
- Most artists are from Metro Detroit, but several come from other states and abroad.
- Prices range from around $50-$500.
Catch up quick: Irwin House opened in 2018, brought to life by Valerie Irwin and her late husband, Council B. Irwin Jr., both art lovers and collectors.
- They traveled the world appreciating indigenous arts practices and wanted to support local talent in Detroit. The center showcases their collection as well as featuring underrepresented contemporary artists' work.
What they're saying: "In the name of art, this show brings everything and everyone together," gallery director Misha McGlown said in a news release. "It's always an important show for us every year, but in these divisive times, the exhibition feels that much more essential."
If you go: The exhibition is open noon-7pm Thursdays-Saturdays and noon-5pm Sundays at 2351 W. Grand Blvd. It is open by appointment on other days and times.
- Irwin House will host a free social with the artists and holiday beverages 2-5pm Sunday and a soft closing reception 2-6pm Dec. 21.
