We recently asked readers to send in their first impressions of the new Ralph Wilson Park that opened along Detroit's west riverfront late last month.
- Here's some of what you said, edited for brevity and clarity:
Bob G.: There is only one question/comment that I haven't seen answered. I'm excited to see the new park and enjoy what has been built. What is the city's plan to maintain the integrity of the park? I.e.: Maintenance? Upkeep? Trash pickup?
- In reply, Detroit Riverfront Conservancy spokesperson Marc Pasco tells us the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation established a $10 million endowment for park upkeep — and the conservancy fundraises year-round to take care of all its riverfront park spaces.
Jeremy R.: Having a toddler playground separate from the larger area is a huge deal and should be talked about more.
Chris and Bill: My husband and I went to the grand opening of Ralph C. Wilson Park. We loved it. Walked around the whole park and ate at one of the food trucks.
Donald G.: There is a large, flat area on the elevated area at the west portion of the park. Kids were playing football there Saturday and Sunday. Any professional journalist would have done a more complete tour before providing erroneous information.
- Our thought bubble: Donald is referencing Joe's comment that the park lacks an open space for tossing a football. We wanted to note that we did see this "elevated area" (the Summit), but didn't consider it a designated flat space.
Dwight P.: The planners did an excellent job in designing the park and incorporating some very novel features, especially the hills. Due to my age (73), I remember very well what the area used to look like and this is infinitely better.
Bill S.: The Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park is a fabulously well-thought-out park at present. But the 927 trees that have been planted will make it the most beautiful feature for miles around when they mature.
- My wife and I, like many others, have ridden our bike past this park while it was under construction over the last three years. We were not disappointed at all when we joined the tens of thousands for its opening. There will be things to tweak in the future, like the density of the gravel on paths to accommodate heavy rain showers and managing the water feature for safety.
