The new 22-acre Ralph Wilson riverfront park isn't all that's opening Oct. 25 — so is a new segment of the riverwalk.
Why it matters: The nonprofit Detroit Riverfront Conservancy has a vision to connect 5.5 miles of uninterrupted pathway along the Detroit River for walkers, joggers and cyclists between Belle Isle's MacArthur Bridge and the Ambassador Bridge.
- It'll reach a new milestone in that goal later this month.
State of play: As Wilson Park opens with a Harvest Fest celebration, new segments of river-adjacent paths will also open at the park, along a parcel just east of the park and a nearby boardwalk.
- Those sections are significant because they connect part of the west riverfront to downtown.
Yes, but: While the 3.5-mile east riverfront is considered complete, there's an incomplete section on the west side, between Wilson Park and Riverside Park, just west of the Ambassador Bridge.
What they're saying: The owner of the property is the Moroun family organization, whose expansive portfolio includes the Ambassador Bridge.
- The conservancy is speaking with them and "we'll get there," but there's no timeline in place, spokesperson Marc Pasco tells Axios.
