Welcome back to our regular election season update as we're speeding toward the Nov. 4 general election.
Absentee incoming: Absentee ballots will be available starting Sept. 25 — meaning candidates will soon ramp up efforts to capture the wide swath of people who vote early.
Sheffield on tour: Mayoral candidate and City Council President Mary Sheffield's next district-by-district town hall is Sept. 10 from 6-7:30pm in District 1 at Citadel Of Praise.
- After that, she's in District 6 on Sept. 17 from 6-7:30pm at the Basilica of Sainte Anne de Detroit.
- Locations are TBD for town halls Oct. 2, Oct. 9, Oct. 23 and Oct. 30.
- Residents can ask questions and hear about Sheffield's priorities at these free public events.
Kinloch's conversations: Mayoral candidate the Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr. has also planned citywide community conversations — similar to the pre-primary town halls he held in each district.
- The first is tomorrow at 6pm in District 2 at Christian Gospel Center COGIC. The next is Saturday at noon in District 1 at New Jerusalem Temple Missionary Baptist Church.
Gender has been a topic in the race, as Sheffield would be Detroit's first female mayor.
- Kinloch's campaign is hosting a women's leadership event Saturday at Cass Tech, with his wife Robin Kinloch joined by endorsers like former U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence.
- The event's description says the election "isn't about being the first — it's about putting people first. Be part of the women-led movement backing Solomon Kinloch for Mayor."
