LIV Golf heats up Metro Detroit with stars and media drama

LIV Golf's weekend tournament in Metro Detroit has barely started and it's already meeting expectations — delivering world-class golf with a dash of controversy.

Why it matters: The season-ending event includes golf superstars like Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm, showcasing LIV's unique team-style format at a Plymouth resort that received $50 million in upgrades.

Between the lines: The LIV golf tour has attracted criticism since launching in 2022, partly because it is funded by the Saudi government.

A local podcaster, Bill Hobson, had his tournament press credential revoked after refusing to pull down an interview with a LIV golfer that included topics the tour didn't like, the Detroit News reported.

If you go: The tournament is Friday through Sunday at The Cardinal at St. John's in Plymouth.

Teams will compete against each other in a combination of match play and stroke play.
Daily tickets start at $45. Kids 12 and under are free with a ticketed adult.

The intrigue: LIV touts a less formal environment. Golfers can wear shorts, for example, and tour stops feature "party holes" with walk-up music and raucous crowds.

Musical performances include Imagine Dragons on Saturday and Swedish House Mafia on Sunday.
