Picture this: After an agonizingly long walk in 90-degree heat, your dog finally does their business. You scoop it up and realize there are no nearby public trash receptacles.
What's your next move?
Why it matters: We have a morality question for you, readers. Is it socially acceptable for dog owners to use their neighbors' trash cans to dispose of their dogs' waste?
- Or are they duty-bound to carry their pet's poop until they find a public can or return to their home?
Driving the news: Axios Cleveland's Sam Allard brought this up recently to readers and said he's on the "drop it anywhere" side. He got some strong feedback — including from a reader who said he sounds "quite entitled and completely rude."
Now, we want to know what you Metro Detroiters believe.
- It's a quandary that gets to the core of an endlessly debatable existential dilemma — what qualifies as human decency? And how far do our personal freedoms extend?
OK, maybe it's not quite that serious.

💠Annalise's thought bubble: I'm not perfect, but I do always try to put my dog's waste in a public can, and I don't mind carrying it. Go ahead: Ask me anything about the nearest trash can in my neighborhood.
