Dearborn restaurant breaks world record for agave spirits

By the numbers: Guinness certified M Cantina's collection of 1,825 distinct bottles of 100% agave spirits Tuesday.

• A New Jersey restaurant set the previous record last year with 1,033 bottles.

Context: All tequilas are agave spirits, but not all agave spirits are tequilas.

Between the lines: Setting a world record wasn't M Cantina's goal as it amassed its collection, owner and chef Junior Merino tells Axios.

• "I wanted to showcase all the amazing spirits of Mexico that most people don't know about," he says.
• When he learned of the previous record in New Jersey, Merino knew his inventory was larger — and Guinness' official stamp would be proof.

The fine print: Officially, the record is for "offering the most commercially available varieties of agave spirits in a restaurant," per a news release.

What they're saying: "Of the 1,825 bottles, they're all the most high quality and authentic in nature," Chloe McCarthy, the Guinness World Records adjudicator who certified the award, said in a statement after confirming the availability of each individual bottle.
