Among filers receiving a refund. Data: IRS; Map: Alex Fitzpatrick/Axios.
Thousands of dollarsin federal tax refunds are on the way for many Michiganders.
Why it matters: Refunds are the silver lining that comes with tax season.
By the numbers: Nearly 70% of Michiganders who filed tax returns in tax year 2022, the latest data available, received a refund, per IRS data.
The state's average federal tax refund was $3,047 — 29th in the country and lower than the U.S. average of $3,288.
Florida had the nation's highest at $3,852.
But it was better than what people got in Maine: $2,656.
Reality check: While many people eagerly await their tax refunds as a kind of bonus, it's really just money you temporarily loaned to the government at 0% interest.
