Lions overhaul coaching staff after key departures

Catch up quick: Three days after the Washington Commanders eliminated Detroit from the playoffs, the Bears announced Johnson as their new head coach.

• Former wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El and former assistant quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett then followed Johnson to Chicago.
• The same week, the New York Jets hired Glenn as their head coach. Joining him are two former Lions assistants — Steve Heiden, who coached tight ends, and passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand.
• Former defensive line coach Terrell Williams went to the Patriots, and assistant defensive line coach Cameron Davis left the team.

The latest: To replace Glenn, the Lions promoted Kelvin Sheppard from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator.

• Detroit hired John Morton from the Denver Broncos to be its new offensive coordinator. Former Stanford coach David Shaw, who was also on the Broncos' staff, will be the Lions' passing game coordinator.
• New defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers comes to Detroit from Tampa Bay, where he coached the same position group.

The bottom line: Campbell's big test this offseason will be molding his new staff into a cohesive unit that takes Detroit deeper into the playoffs.
