Gardner White to open furniture store in downtown Detroit

• Other retailers have closed downtown in recent years, like Under Armour and Madewell, as well as locally owned shops House of Pure Vin and Détroit is the New Black.

What they're saying: Mayor Mike Duggan said in a news release that bringing GW Home downtown is "a big part of re-establishing a vibrant downtown shopping district."

Between the lines: The store from the more than century-old, Warren-based Gardner White will sell furniture, home decor, art, accessories and gifts, per the news release.

Flashback: The GW Home store is expected to open this spring at 1201 Woodward Ave., in the space that Under Armour occupied until 2022. The building is owned by Dan Gilbert's Bedrock.

• Most recently, the spot was occupied by a pop-up called Next Level, a roller rink and arcade from the owner of RollerCade, a southwest roller rink. It opened in time for the NFL Draft last spring but closed recently.
