Southwest Detroit's new affordable apartments

State of play: Of its 52 units, 42 are designated as "affordable" for individuals earning between about $20,000 and $54,000, or 30%-80% of the area median income. Monthly rents are between $503 and $1,387.

• The building's 11 market-rate units are renting for between $1,231 and $1,461 a month.

Follow the money: The Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) and Cinnaire Solutions partnered on the $25 million project. Funding included:

• $12.4 million in low-income housing tax credit investments from Cinnaire
• $3.8 million from MSHDA
• $2.5 million from the city
• $1.6 million from Invest Detroit

What we're watching: Which businesses end up occupying the complex's retail space.

• Cafe Clark, a coffee shop led by local residents, is La Joya's first retailer.
• The SDBA is looking to fill two additional retail spaces.
• There is also an accelerator space for pop-up businesses to stress-test their operations and discover if they are ready for a brick-and-mortar space.
