A new movie about two best friends played by SZA and Keke Palmer, "One of Them Days," was directed by Detroit native Lawrence Lamont.
Why it matters: The slice-of-life comedy has scored sky-high reviews and is playing all across town, including at the city's only first-run movie theater, Bel Air, as well as MJR and Emagine in the metro.
Between the lines: "One of Them Days" is Lamont's debut film. He's made music videos with Big Sean and J. Cole, though his first was in 2008 when he was a teenager, for local rapper Earlly Mac, according to the Detroit News.
- Lamont, who now lives in LA — where the movie is set — loved movies from an early age on Detroit's east side. As a kid, he was "surrounded by VHS tapes in his aunt's basement, where he started imagining new endings for movies," his IMDB bio reads.
What they're saying: "I think Detroit is a city that sticks together. If you can have some people to have your back, they can really help you overcome some crazy obstacles," Lamont told Outlier Media, discussing the impression he wants to leave with local viewers. "I want people to leave this film and just feel hopeful."
