Five Detroit restaurants and chefs are semifinalists this year for the industry's Oscars — the James Beard Awards:

Selden Standard in Midtown, for outstanding restaurant
Vecino in Midtown, for best new restaurant
Baobab Fare in New Center, for outstanding hospitality
Javier Bardauil of Barda in Core City, best chef Great Lakes region
John Yelinek of Ladder 4 Wine Bar in Southwest, best chef Great Lakes region

Plus, other semifinalists in Michigan include Ferndale's Secret Bakery, Ann Arbor's Miss Kim chef, Ji Hye Kim, and Traverse City's The Cooks' House chefs, Jennifer Blakeslee and Eric Patterson.

What's next: The finalist list comes out April 2, with winners to be announced June 16.
