A new exhibition, "Warp and Weft: Technologies within Textiles," delves into how weavers and other artists experiment with technology like computers, mechanics and looms to tell stories, according to a press release.
The vibe: Some of the artists primarily use fiber arts like weaving and knitting, while some just incorporate a small amount of fabric into their work, according to a press release.
- One piece, Alisha B. Wormsley and Kite's "Cosmologyscape," allows visitors to enter into a "dream chamber" where they input their dreams into a website and get back a digital quilt square that will be used for a larger collective digital quilt.
Zoom in: The group of more than 30 artists includes local names like Tiff Massey, who has a big installation on view at the DIA, textile and photo artist Akea Brionne and painter James Benjamin Franklin, who uses thrifted fabrics as canvas for acrylic and gel.
- Local quilting artist Carole Harris' abstract work layers found fabric with rips and imperfections, showing how time passes.
If you go: The exhibition is on display Saturday through May 3 at the Shepherd, a venue in a former church on the east side that opened last year.
- The opening event is Saturday from 5-8pm and includes an artists' conversation.
