Nonprofit CEO launches campaign for Detroit mayor

• She plans to zero in on business corridors, after-school programs, reliable public transit, community policing and more, she said during the event at the St. Suzanne Cody Rouge Community Center.

What they're saying: "There's a lot of pain left in this city — that means there's a lot of work to do in this city," Carla Walker-Miller, CEO of well-known Walker-Miller Energy Services, said in a speech introducing Jenkins.

• Jenkins has spent her life serving the city and preparing to do that work, she added.

Catch up quick: Jenkins, a Detroit native, has led THAW — which helps those in need with electric, gas and other utility bills — since 2014.

• Previously, she was on city council from 2010 to 2014, including serving as president in 2013-14.

• Another past role of Jenkins' was residential treatment program director with Mariners Inn, a shelter for those experiencing homelessness.

Zoom out: Jenkins' announcement comes a month after City Council President Mary Sheffield officially launched her campaign. Either would be Detroit's first woman mayor.

• Others expected to run (or rumored as potential candidates) include city council member Fred Durhal III, state Rep. Joe Tate, attorney Todd Perkins and Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr.
