There are many ways to support Detroit entrepreneurs this Small Business Saturday, from giveaways and food to holiday-season shopping.
The big picture: The national annual event, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, serves as a reminder that while Amazon Prime is easy, small neighborhood businesses are an essential part of Detroit's continued growth, officials regularly say.
State of play: Small Business Saturday is every day for the Michigan Black Business Alliance, Leecia Barnes, the group's membership experience coordinator, tells Axios.
- But some businesses collaborate to increase their reach, excitement and visibility on Small Business Saturday, Barnes says.
Between the lines: The designated day is also an opportunity to discuss the fact that while some neighborhood commercial corridors in Detroit have seen ample investment, other areas — like further south on Livernois Avenue past the Avenue of Fashion — have local businesses to support, too, Barnes adds.
Here are some places to shop small in Detroit on Saturday:
In Corktown and Southwest Detroit, attend a small business event with vendors at the Detroit Hispanic Development Corp. building, plus performances, hot cocoa, DJs and pictures with Santa.
- 1211 Trumbull St., 11am-5pm indoors, with free shuttles to other participating businesses from 11am-8pm.
Holidays on Grand River in Grandmont Rosedale will include pop-up shops, a nearby art exhibition, a book reading, holiday drink-tasting, food trucks, vendors and Santa-themed fun.
- It is centered on 19800 Grand River Ave., 3-7pm, but with activities at nearby businesses, too.
Shop for more gifts, including handmade crafts and treats, at the Congregation cafe's small-business market, which features live music.
- 9321 Rosa Parks Blvd., 12-5pm.
Stop by Shop the Smalls, a Detroit Sip cafe vendor market featuring clothing, candles, skincare, art, and more gift options. The first 75 customers will receive a voucher coupon.
- 7420 W. McNichols Road, 10am-5pm.
The bottom line: "The day infuses money back into our local economies, promotes vibrant and diverse communities, and celebrates the important role of small businesses in the national economy," as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce puts it.
