👋 Annalise here. It's been a long fall and election season, and if you're like us at Axios Detroit, you may want to partake in an adult beverage.
The big picture: My favorite splurge choice is a margarita, which motivated me to round up some of the best places to grab one in the city.
- The margarita is the epitome of the sweet-sour flavor combination, fresh with lime and salty on the rim (or spicy, thanks to Tajin).
- Recipes generally use tequila, orange liqueur, sweetener and lime.
Detroit has many great options. Are we actually "Margaritaville"??
La Palapa Taqueria: For flavored varieties, there's nowhere better than this southwest spot, which offers around a dozen fresh, delicious options for $10 each: The Taco Showdown award-winning Petalo de Rosa is balanced and satisfying with rosewater, rose petals and cucumber. But there's also mango, jalapeño, guava and others.
- 1633 Lawndale St.

Bodega: This upscale store and eatery in Brush Park has a surprisingly fascinating cocktail menu, including a solid (and very strong) classic margarita.
- 2671 Brush St.
La Jalisciense Supermercado Y Taqueria: A delicious menu, a lively atmosphere and large margarita servings with Tajin rims. That's all you need. La Jalisciense is great for a brunch-time drink and has solid mocktail options, too, Eater Detroit wrote in a recent Mexican cocktail guide.
- 3923 Vernor Hwy.
Coriander Kitchen and Farm: Many folks reference the Farm Marg at this canal-side Jefferson Chalmers spot. I found it too spicy, but the jalapeño and cilantro simple syrup pleases those who can handle their heat.
- 14601 Riverside Blvd.
El Barzon: This long-standing Italian-Mexican restaurant's margarita menu is memorable. Options include classic, top-shelf, V.I.P., and flavored. There's even a "Motown Margarita" with Patron Silver, Cointreau, fresh lime, orange juice, and simple syrup.
- 3710 Junction Ave.
Mezcal: Choose between several well-made options here — the house margarita with tequila or mezcal, the classed-up premium margarita or an Italian take with tequila and limoncello.
- There are three locations, in Midtown, Ferndale and Dearborn.
