New North End housing adds to affordable landscape

• The sizes range from 222 to 758 square feet, with rent starting at $699. The smallest units come furnished.
• The units' affordability targets people with incomes ranging from 50% of the regional median income, around $67,200, to 120%.

Context: In Detroit, which lacks enough high-quality housing residents can afford, the government touts that it has seen $1 billion in private and public money invested in under-market-rate housing since 2019. It is pushing for another $1 billion in the next five years.

By the numbers: The Beauton is funded in part through a $1.6 million loan from the Detroit Housing for the Future Fund, a private investment vehicle created in partnership with the city to financially assist affordable housing projects receiving public funding.

• It also received loans from Capital Impact Partners and the Black and brown developer fund Ebiara, as well as state and local funding.
