State of play: The current chief, James White, is leaving for a role running the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network.
White is a licensed therapist who has led the state civil rights department and has previously done police leadership work.
Between the lines: Bettison spent 27 years in the Detroit Police Department and was first assistant chief of police before becoming deputy mayor in 2022.
