For Detroit patrons, a sign of restaurants' food-safety compliance

Detroit's restaurant sign ordinance went into effect this month, using green, red and white placards to show restaurants' compliance with food safety rules.

The big picture: The proposed ordinance faced opposition from some restaurants, which expressed concern that displaying red, yellow, or green signs might hurt businesses that have not committed serious violations.

The ordinance was revised to give restaurants more flexibility in addressing mistakes without public visibility.

How it works: The placards are to be displayed near the entrance of the 1,900 food spots licensed by the city, according to a news release.

A green placard means the restaurant has a valid license and has no serious food safety rule violations.
A red placard means the restaurant has no valid license or has been shut down over serious violations.

If the restaurant needs to make corrections, a temporary white placard is issued. The white sign is informational and describes the restaurant sign ordinance program.
