Storytelling performance festival comes to Detroit

Between the lines: Some of the first-person narratives may feel similar to the popular storytelling event Moth, but Story Fest also supports storytellers with multimedia, says McArdle Hankin, co-founder of Back Pocket Media, which produces Story Fest. Back Pocket started in San Francisco producing creativity-centered live journalism shows.

• Expect archival video, recorded interviews in the background, voicemails, and old letters shown to the audience to help the story,

The intrigue: Hankin doesn't want Back Pocket's events to be insider-y for the journalism community — it's also designed to appeal to people interested in arts and culture, and those looking to do something different for date night.

• The event is sponsored by the Knight Foundation, which counts both Philadelphia and Detroit as cities where it focuses its philanthropic work.

Zoom in: Expect stories from the Detroit Free Press, Metro Times, WDET, BridgeDetroit, Twisted Storytellers and others.

• One expected performer is music writer Kahn Santori Davison, who will speak about the career evolution of a Detroit rapper, P.L., to sports composer, according to Hankin.
