Detroit Action's new labor-focused leader sets sights on 2025

State of play: Detroit Action's top priorities for next year include pushing for reforms in how property taxes are assessed in the city and ensuring total funding for the "Right to Counsel" initiative, which obtains free legal representation for Detroit tenants facing eviction in court, Holiday tells Axios.

• Housing affordability is a major concern. Holiday pointed to rent control, which is popular with local activists but banned by state law.

Catch up quick: Detroit Action, which has 35 full-time staffers, was formed from two previous organizations: Detroit Action Commonwealth and Good Jobs Now, according to its website. Commonwealth was established at an east-side soup kitchen in 2008, and Detroit Action launched in 2019.

• It describes itself as a "community organizing force" by and for Black and brown Detroiters and Michiganders, focusing on housing, workers' rights, and policies that address the root causes of poverty.

What's next: With Holiday's union experience, Detroit Action is looking for space to launch a worker training center as a tangible outlet for its economic justice goals.
