Detroit is among the big U.S. cities where commuters run into the least traffic, at least measured by how fast we're able to drive, per a new report from Lyft.
Why it matters: Slower, more congested commutes can result in longer work days, making it harder to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
State of play: Lyft rides to or from work locations in Detroit during peak commute times reached an average speed of 27 miles per hour over the last year, the third fastest of any city with at least 500,000 people.
What they did: The company analyzed public data sources and millions of Lyft rides to identify cities with the shortest, cheapest and greenest commutes.
Zoom in: Theorizing that 20 minutes in congestion is worse than 20 minutes in free-flow driving, Lyft combined cities' average speeds and commute time into an overall metric, in which Detroit ranked sixth nationwide.
- Commuters who relied on Lyft to get to work averaged 24 minute trips, per the report.
The bottom line: Commuting around Metro Detroit can be painful during construction season, but we have it better than many other big cities.
