New Detroit early-education center aims to help fill gap

• Those education and development opportunities in the first five years of a child's life are a major factor in children's long-term social and physical health, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The latest: The McClellan Early Childhood Center plans to start serving students up to age 5 in October in the Gratiot Woods neighborhood, according to a news release.

• Detroit-based nonprofit Matrix Human Services will operate the new center.
• The site was purchased and developed by Chicago-based community financial institution IFF.

Context: Detroit's child care ecosystem is over capacity, leaving out 15,500 children from an estimated 37,000 in need of care, per the city's Office of Early Learning in 2023.

• The current landscape impedes some parents from finding work and makes Detroit less attractive to potential residents, the office says.

By the numbers: The $8.7 million McClellan center on the former Pingree Elementary School site, with eight classrooms, also received funding from JPMorgan Chase, the Kresge Foundation, the city and others.

Zoom out: Nationally, the jobs market for child care has been struggling to recover from the pandemic. Daycare is a difficult industry, with operators running on razor-thin margins while constrained in what they can charge working parents to afford living wages for workers.

• That gap between the cost of care and affordability is "one of the key drivers of Michigan's undersized child care workforce and shortage of available child care," according to a May U of M report.
