Belle Isle's historic fountain is getting $6 million in repairs to keep it running for years to come, the Detroit News reports.
Why it matters: The James Scott Memorial Fountain is an iconic landmark for people to gather at, take photos with or simply marvel at its beauty.
State of play: The fountain will shut down later this year for the upgrades, which include removing the lower section's marble and fixing its lower bowl, which has a diameter of 510 feet.
Federal pandemic relief funds will pay for the work.
What they're saying: "The fountain has not been holistically addressed for some time and has a long list of deferred maintenance items and equipment past due for replacement," Amanda Treadwell, a DNR parks supervisor, told the News.
Flashback: The fountain was finished in 1925 and designed by Cass Gilbert, who also designed the Detroit Public Library and the U.S. Supreme Court Building, according to HistoricDetroit.org.
What we're watching: The timeline for finishing the repairs is uncertain, per the News.
