New exhibition in old church explores surfaces

A new art exhibition from the Library Street Collective, "In an effort to be held," brings more than 20 artists to a recently opened arts center in a former church.

The big picture: The Shepherd gallery opened in May with its first exhibition, surrounded by community space, a skate park and more, Urbanize Detroit reported.

This next exhibition in the converted church space focuses on the "aesthetics of the surface" — including collage, transference processes and casting, according to a press release.

Between the lines: The participating artists are examining the histories held in materials and on surfaces, with a focus on "terrestrial, hidden, mythological and celestial," the release says.

Zoom in: Artist Ilana Savdie's paintings, made at the same scale as her body, use beeswax, oil and acrylic to convey bodies, body snatchers and shapeshifters. Her work focuses on change, identity and otherworldliness.
