The Rocket Mortgage Classic teed off Thursday at the Detroit Golf Club with cooperative weather, thousands of fans and even a hole in one.
Why it matters: The PGA Tour comes to the city once a year for the Rocket Mortgage.
- Top players like Scottie Scheffler skipped the event this year, but an impressive roster of future stars is in the field.
I got to the course early to follow the marquee morning group — Tom Kim, Cameron Young and Robert MacIntyre — and check out the food and merch options.
- Here are the highlights:
🧢 Merchandise tent: The selection has improved since the tournament began in 2019. Many items still prominently display the corporate-looking Rocket Mortgage logo. But offerings from Carhartt and Trap Golf have bolder references to Detroit.
🌭 Food and drink: Defending champion Rickie Fowler has a signature sub at concession stands. "Rick's pick," basically a cross between a turkey sub and an Italian sub, was a great alternative to the standard golf course hot dog.
- Bottled water and sodas cost $5.50-$7, beers $12.25 and cocktails start at $14.
🔭 Viewing areas: The tournament layout groups holes close together, so spectators can see action on multiple holes from the same vantage point.
- My favorite views were between the eighth green and the ninth tee, and the grandstands behind the 15th hole.
What's next: The tournament runs through Sunday.
