Nearly $61M pours into Iowa's biggest political races

Republican Zach Lahn raised $16.9 million from July 15-Oct. 14, narrowly topping Democrat Rob Sand's $16.3 million, according to campaign reports filed Monday.

• Sand finished with about $5.35 millionavailable, compared with Lahn's roughly $403,000. Lahn also reported $2.5 million in outstanding loans.

The intrigue: Sand's campaign says its haul nearly doubled the previous Iowa gubernatorial fundraising record for the same reporting period.

Yes, but: Lahn raised even more.

By the numbers: About $11.8 millionof Lahn's latest haul came from the Republican Governors Association's Right Direction PAC.

• The Republican Party of Iowa contributed another $1.72 million and MAHA Action PAC gave $1 million.

Meanwhile, Sand received $5.5 million from the Democratic Governors Association, while his wife and members of her Lauridsen family gave another $1.25 million.

• Sand reported more than 88,000 individual contributions during the period, compared with roughly 5,000 for Lahn.

The latest: MAHA Action PAC announced another $1.5 million contribution to Lahn after the Oct. 14 reporting cutoff.

State of play: Iowa's federal races are attracting major money, too, with the Cook Political Report rating Iowa's U.S. Senate and 2nd Congressional District as toss-ups and its 1st and 3rd districts as leaning Democratic.

• U.S. Senate: Democrat Josh Turek raised $13.9 million in the third quarter versus Republican Ashley Hinson's roughly $3.3 million.
• 1st District: Democrat Christina Bohannan raised $2.4 million, while Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks raised $1.7 million.
• 2nd District: Democrat Lindsay James raised $1.9 million, more than twice Republican Joe Mitchell's roughly $745,000.
• 3rd District: Democrat Sarah Trone Garriott raised nearly $2.4 million, more than twice Republican Rep. Zach Nunn's roughly $1 million.

Zoom in: The 4th District, which Cook rates as solidly Republican, reported far less fundraising during the quarter.

• Republican Chris McGowan raised about $173,500, compared with Democrat Dave Dawson's roughly $104,500.

What's next: Iowa gubernatorial campaigns that received a combined $10,000 or more in contributions, loans or in-kind support between Oct. 15 and 27 must file supplementary reports by Oct. 30, offering one last look at late money before Election Day.
