First look: Heart of America's proposed $24M headquarters

Heart of America Group is advancing a plan announced in June for a $24 million, five-story office building across from the former Des Moines City Hall.

Why it matters: The new headquarters would put a prominent but long-vacant East Village site back to use and support hundreds of jobs.

Driving the news: The City Council will consider a preliminary agreement Monday under which Heart of America would pay $1 million for the city-owned site at 401 Robert D. Ray Drive and receive up to $3.95 million in municipal incentives.

Zoom in: The 75,000-square-foot project, which would house Heart of America's headquarters, is expected to support 160 to 300 jobs and include a privately owned park and pedestrian space open to the public.

What's next: If approved, Monday's agreement would initiate a 30-day competitive process, with a public hearing on Nov. 2 and construction targeted for spring 2027.
