Heirloom tomatoes, honey and basil make this toast

🍅 Jason here: I eat this toast every morning when the heirloom tomatoes and basil in my garden are in season — typically from July through late October.

On my plate: Buttered toast, honey, basil and tomatoes.

That’s it.

Zoom in: My favorite bread is jalapeño-cheddar from South Union Bakery, which I buy at Gateway Market.

I go with local honey and am currently using some from The Holton Homestead in Elkhart.

The taste: The honey softens the jalapeño-cheddar bread’s kick, while the basil and tomatoes keep it bright and fresh.

It’s somewhere between a garden snack and lazy bruschetta, and I sometimes eat it for lunch, too!

The bottom line: Summer on toast is a real meal.
