Frozen cocktail bar to open in Des Moines' East Village

Narwhal's Crafted plans to bring its frozen cocktails to Des Moines' East Village.
Why it matters: The regional bar chain would expand the East Village's nightlife mix and help fill retail space in a new $35.8 million mixed-use development at 418 E. Grand Ave.
The big picture: Narwhal's currently operates four locations in Missouri and Illinois, serving frozen cocktails, flights, fishbowls and other drinks.
Zoom in: The bar would occupy part of the ground floor of a newly constructed five-story building.
- The building's upper floors contain 132 apartments.
The intrigue: Narwhal's is seeking the DSM Board of Adjustment's approval Wednesday for three illuminated signs on the building's west side.
- The signs would total about 81 square feet — almost 22 more than normally allowed — and include two wall signs and a projecting sign.
- City staff recommends approval.
What we're watching: When we can review our first "thoughtfully crafted" drink.
- Narwhal's site says it'll open the DSM site later this year.
