How Hinterland founder Sam Summers starts his day

Summers lives in Des Moines, where he enjoys spending his time gardening.

• He also owns land in Saint Charles, a town of around 600 people that grows by the thousands, as people flock to his property for Hinterland.
• Next month, the four-day event will draw in fans and headliners like Lorde and Mumford and Sons.

Here's how Summers starts his day:

⏰ Wake up: 6:30am

🍳 Breakfast: Hard-boiled eggs and an Alani. (Cotton Candy is his favorite flavor.)

• "I used to drink coffee, and then I started on Vyvanse, and I just can't drink coffee," he says, noting he no longer likes the taste.

📱 What he's reading: Texts and emails.

💡 Advice for Iowans who want to enter the music business: Hang around music venues and have conversations — even if you feel socially awkward.

• "I'm an introverted person, but you've got to be uncomfortable sometimes," he says. "Talk to people and ask questions and learn."
