Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge visitor center will be cut in half

State of play: The proposed redesign would cut the visitor center in half, reducing it from 43,000 square feet to around 21,000 square feet, per the document.

• It would include an exhibit area, a multipurpose room, a nature store and office space.
• A classroom and lab, both present in the current building, do not appear in the proposed layout.

By the numbers: Capacity for the exhibit areas would drop from 150 people to 50 people.

• The estimated cost for repairs is $7 million.

What's next: The refuge wants to continue offering educational programming and is holding an open house this weekend for input on the programs.
