Nestled inside IndyMart Grocery in West Des Moines, the store operates its own cafe with a wide menu of vegetarian South Indian food.
What I ate: Masala paneer dosa ($14), which comes with two chutneys and a side of sambar — a lentil soup.
Dosa is a popular crepe-like dish from South India that's filled with anything you like. I chose masala for some spice, as well as paneer, a mild cheese.
What I liked: I'm familiar with north Indian food, which is more common in Des Moines (think naan and butter chicken). So eating here was a fun culinary adventure, with plenty of dosa spices and fillings to choose from (all vegetarian).
As for the taste of the food, I was impressed by the huge size of the dosa. And it's hard not to like a warm, well-spiced, savory crepe.
