I stopped byTom Archer's Poor Man's Country Club for happy hour, and it checked all the boxes for that precious post-work window: quiet enough to chat, cool vibes and full wine pours.
What we got: My table of four got every happy hour plate: crab cakes ($13), classic shrimp cocktail ($13), meatballs with grilled focaccia ($9), fried Brussels sprouts with pear butter ($9) and mussels in Peroni broth ($11).
Basic cocktails like a Negroni and vodka cranberry were $6, and a "pour man's" glass of cabernet was $5.
What I liked: The food tasted like fine dining, but not overworked. Splitting everything four ways, my share was just $14 before tip (no drink), and I left full enough to skip dinner.
If you go: If you've been before and haven't tried it in a while, the Register reports there's a new executive chef at the supper club.
Happy hour is 4-5pm in the dining room and 4-6pm at the bar, Tuesday-Friday under Val Air Ballroom.
