Des Moines to consider $554K land sale for Hyper Energy Bar project

The Des Moines City Council will next week consider selling 2 acres of municipal property for a Hyper Energy Bar — a fast-growing drive-thru energy drink and coffee chain.

Why it matters: It would be Hyper's first location in Des Moines and a new use for long-held, largely undeveloped downtown city property.

Catch up quick: The site, 100 11th St., is in an area between railroad tracks and MLK that has been city-owned and undeveloped for decades.

The proposed sale price is $554,000, which the city says reflects fair market value based on an independent appraisal.
The city has not offered incentives for the project, which must be completed by March 15, 2027, according to the purchase agreement obtained by Axios through a records request.

State of play: Hyper is an Iowa-based company that launched in 2021 and has nine locations, primarily in the metro area.

There are at least four more locations in development, including sites in Nebraska and Missouri, according to its website.

What's next: The council's meeting on Nov. 17 begins at 5pm.
