Reader survey: Most open to fireworks snitching

Most Axios Des Moines readers say they would consider reporting their neighbors for setting off illegal fireworks.

Catch up quick: DSM has battled fireworks complaints and destruction for years despite a city ban that prohibited them.

• A new Iowa law now permits fireworks on private property with DSM aligning its ordinance with the state to allow them from 9am-10pm on July 3; 9am-11pm on July 4; and 9am to midnight on Dec. 31.

Driving the news: DMPD has provided tips for residents to help identify people who shoot fireworks in public areas like parks or during unauthorized times.

State of play: Nearly 9 in 10 readers are either fully prepared to snitch or ready to consider it if the booms get out of hand.

Zoom in: In our latest reader survey, 67 out of 148 voters (45%) said they would "maybe" report a neighbor, depending on how late or chaotic the fireworks were that evening.

• Over 41% (61) selected "Absolutely — I'm Team Sleep & Safety."
• Less than 14% (20) said, "Nah — Live and let boom."

The bottom line: Fireworks rebels had better watch their backs!
