Jasper and Marion counties experienced the highest frequency of lightning strikes in Iowa, according to data from Vaisala Xweather — nearly 169 and 151 strikes per square mile last year, respectively.
Why it matters: In addition to the immediate danger to people, aircraft, and infrastructure, lightning can ignite wildfires — and researchers have found that the number of strikes is expected to rise due to climate change.
Zoom in: In the metro, Polk County had nearly 142 strikes per square mile.
