Des Moines is launching a new study to identify traffic changes along a nearly two-mile stretch of University Avenue, from 9th Street near downtown to East 14th Street.
Why it matters: It's one of the metro's busiest and most hazardous traffic corridors, with several schools and hospitals along the route.
Catch up quick: The City Council adopted a Vision Zero plan about two years ago, with the goal of eliminating serious traffic accidents by 2040.
High-injury corridors have been pinpointed for improvements, and some projects, including those along other segments of University Avenue, have been completed.
The city was recently awarded a $13 million federal grant to expedite some of the work.
What's next: The city will hire a consultant as early as next month to start the study.
Public meetings and council reviews must take place before recommendations are adopted.
