Des Moines' Silent Book Club brings introverts together

This is for all the introverts out there who might be craving cozy, comfy vibes but still want to go out.

Driving the news: Silent Book Club DSM is a new club that invites people to relax and read their books with others — without having to talk to them.

How it started: Erin Dohlman was inspired to start a Silent Book Club locally after she learned about the growing trend from her friend in Omaha.

She, along with three other avid readers, started the club as a small, word-of-mouth group that drew 20 people to Secret Admirer downtown last spring.
Now, it's grown into a ticketed event that mostly recently attracted 100+ people to Vibrant Coffeehouse.

How it works: People settle in, grab a drink and socialize (if they want to). Then there's an hour of silently reading whatever book they brought.

Every event also has a book swap.

What's next: The next Silent Book Club is meeting at Big Grove Brewery on Jan. 14.
