Iowa Republicans look likely to expand presence in Legislature

Iowa Republicans' already historic majority in the Legislature is expected to become even larger by the start of session in January as Tuesday's results have come into focus.

Why it matters: It's full steam ahead for Iowa Republican priorities, including property tax reform and eventually eliminating the state income tax.

Driving the news: Republicans increased their majority from 64 to 67 seats in the Iowa House. It appears the state Senate GOP will go from a 33 to 35-seat majority, though several races remain close.

That may result in supermajorities in both chambers, giving Republicans broader power to pass priorities — and Gov. Kim Reynolds' appointees — over Democratic opposition.

The latest: As of Wednesday afternoon, the race between Iowa Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott (D-West Des Moines) and Republican Mark Hanson was still too close to call, though Trone Garriott was ahead by 19 votes.

Results were also tight between incumbent state Sen. Nate Boulton (D-Des Moines) and Republican Mike Pike.

What they're saying: Reynolds will be able to more easily pass her priorities thanks to the solid majorities, Karen Kedrowski, professor and director of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics told IPR.

A larger issue will be disagreements within the party.
For example: Reynolds has tried to pass a bill allowing over-the-counter birth control for years and gained Senate support. But House Republicans are divided over the issue, despite Reynolds' backing.

The other side: Democrats were able to flip one senate seat Tuesday in Urbandale.

Democrat Matt Blake defeated longtime incumbent GOP state Sen. Brad Zaun.
