How to request an absentee ballot in Iowa for the 2024 election

Tuesday is the first day registered Iowa voters can request an absentee ballot to vote in the Nov. 5 election.

How it works: Print out an absentee ballot request form, fill it out and mail it or return it in person to your county auditor's office. But don't expect it to arrive until mid-October.

The entire election timeline, per the Iowa Secretary of State's office:

Aug. 27: The first day you can request an absentee ballot.
Oct. 16: The first day county auditors can mail out absentee ballots.
Oct. 21: The deadline for all absentee ballot requests. Those requests must reach the office by 5pm.
Election Day, Nov. 5: Absentee ballots must be returned by mail or received in person by the auditor's office by 8pm.
